Palestinian Prisoners Suffer Health Deterioration Amid Allegations of Medical Neglect

Accra:Three Palestinian prisoners are experiencing severe health issues in Israeli prisons, reportedly due to medical neglect, harsh detention conditions, disease spread, and inadequate healthcare, as reported by the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, a report was issued following visits by commission lawyers to the prisoners. Hayel Deifallah, 60, from Rafat, northwest of Ramallah, is enduring dental pain and broken teeth after an assault by Israeli forces during his detention. He has also contracted scabies, yet prison authorities have not provided necessary medical treatment.

Brothers Udai and Ammar Jamal Anbas, from Tulkarm, are also facing challenging detention conditions and health problems amid food shortages and alleged medical neglect. Udai Jamal Anbas, 35, detained since May 25, 2025, suffers from serious injuries, including a bullet fragment in his lungs, causing severe pain. Despite requiring medical examinations and follow-ups, prison authorities have not provided the required care.

Udai is held at Rimon Prison, where food is reportedly inadequate, and his outdoor exercise is restricted to one hour daily. His brother, Ammar Jamal Anbas, 38, detained since January 21, 2016, is serving a 24-year sentence at Nafha Prison. He has lost about 17 kilograms since the onset of the Gaza conflict due to insufficient food supplies and suffers from knee and back pain. Prison authorities have allegedly denied him his prescribed medication.

The commission states that around 5,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons suffer from various illnesses, with some needing specialized care. It urges international legal and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently to safeguard the lives of those with serious and chronic medical conditions.
