WHO Reports Alarming Malnutrition Levels Among Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women in Gaza

Gaza City: World Health Organization spokesperson Margaret Harris has reported that 90% of pregnant and breastfeeding women in the Gaza Strip suffer from severe malnutrition, with the scarcity of medical equipment hindering their access to necessary treatment.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, Harris highlighted the critical health situation in Gaza during press statements for World Health Week, observed annually from April 7 to 13. She reviewed the impacts of the ongoing Israeli conflict, which has lasted approximately a year and a half, on the region’s health infrastructure and population.

Harris noted the significant decline in maternal and child health since the onset of the Israeli offensive on October 7, 2023. She emphasized the urgent need for medical aid, stating that both mothers and children face worsening conditions due to the absence of food and medical supplies.

During a temporary ceasefire, some hospitals in Gaza managed to restore services with international support. However, the resumption of hostilities resulted in further destruction, including the demolition of Nasser Hospital. Harris reported that approximately 20 hospitals are still partially operating but are struggling due to shortages of essential medical supplies.

Expressing appreciation for the resilience of healthcare workers in Gaza, Harris acknowledged their dedication despite facing extreme challenges. She commended their efforts in saving lives and striving to enhance health conditions under dire circumstances.

Since the conflict reignited on October 7, 2023, the Israeli forces’ aggression has claimed the lives of 50,752 citizens, predominantly women and children, and injured 115,475 others. This toll is preliminary, with numerous victims still trapped under rubble and in areas unreachable by rescue teams.
