UN official: Economic activity in the West Bank has stopped and the Gaza economy has collapsed

New York – Together – The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wensland, said today that economic activity in the West Bank has stopped and the Gaza economy has collapsed.

Vinsland added before the UN Security Council that amid the escalation of violence and the widespread Israeli restrictions on movement, the long-standing financial crisis in the Palestinian Authority has worsened significantly, adding that the decline in the Palestinian Authority’s revenues affects many vital services and the payment of public sector salaries, including for the security forces.

“The situation is boiling over and getting worse quickly,” he warned.

Vinsland said that in the months leading up to the war, I regularly warned this Council that more must be done to help stabilize the situation in the West Bank, and this is the case now more than ever.

The UN coordinator stressed that the only viable path is the path that leads to ending the occupation and achieving a two-state solution in line with United Nations resolutions, previous agreements, and international law.

“It is certain that our previous efforts were not enough, and it is a message that resonates today as we celebrate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People,” Vinsland said, stressing that there must be a new and different approach, otherwise we are doomed to return to the path of managing a conflict that is clearly not possible. “It can be managed.”
