Gaza: Two Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip, identified as Mohammad Abdul-Rahman Idris, 35, and Moath Khaled Rayan, 31, have died under mysterious circumstances while in Israeli custody, according to Palestinian prisoner advocacy organizations.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, a joint statement issued by the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission, the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), and the Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights revealed they were informed of Idris’s death on November 29, 2024, via the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority, which confirmed his passing in the Ofer prison. Similarly, Rayan’s death was communicated after inquiries made by the Israeli military, indicating he died on November 2, 2024, though the specifics of his death remain undisclosed.
The statement further disclosed that Mohammad Idris had no known health issues prior to his detention on August 25, 2024. On the other hand, Moath Rayan, who was paralyzed before his detention on Octob
er 21, 2024, endured severe health conditions during his time in detention.
The organizations have condemned the persistent systematic abuse and medical negligence within Israeli prisons, citing the cruel and inhumane treatment prisoners are subjected to. These abuses reportedly include torture, deprivation, and medical crimes, along with various forms of physical and sexual abuse.
The statement underscored the alarming and increasing number of Palestinian prisoners who have died under Israeli detention, attributing this to prolonged mistreatment.
The institutions also highlighted the severe conditions prevailing in Israeli prisons, particularly for sick and injured detainees, cautioning that these conditions will likely result in more deaths.
They pointed out that the number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, surpassing 10,200, is at a historic high, with a growing number of detainees suffering from serious medical conditions and inadequate care. Among the detained, there are also more than 90 fe
male prisoners and over 270 children.
The statement also brought attention to the ongoing practice of enforced disappearances of detainees, especially from Gaza, in Israeli military camps.
