Morocco Advances to World Cup Round of 16 After Tense Penalty Shootout Against Netherlands

Gaza: The Moroccan national team reached the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup early Tuesday morning with a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Atlas Lions continued to make history at the World Cup, securing their place in the knockout stage where they will face one of the tournament's host nations, Canada. The Moroccan team, who finished fourth in the 2022 World Cup, showcased their ability to compete at the highest level with this victory over the Netherlands, considered one of the tournament favorites.

Throughout the match, the Atlas Lions demonstrated their prowess, with Soufiane Rahimi creating the most significant opportunities during both regular time and extra time. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was instrumental in the win, making critical saves during the penalty shootout, including the decisive final penalty.

The Netherlands initially took the lead in the 72nd minute when Kody Kagbo scored from inside the penalty area. However, Morocco's defender Issa Diop equalized in the final minute of regulation time with a header that found the net.

During extra time, Morocco maintained their dominance, though they could not capitalize on opportunities, including a notable chance from Soufiane Rahimi. As both teams tired, the match progressed to penalties, where Morocco ultimately prevailed.
