Gaza: The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has released alarming statistics revealing that 1,327 incidents of 'detention and denial of media coverage' have targeted journalists and media crews from 2023 through the first half of 2026. This report indicates a systematic effort to suppress journalistic activity, restrict access, and conceal violations against the Palestinian people.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Syndicate's Freedoms Committee compiled a detailed report documenting 314 incidents in 2023, 396 in 2024, 425 in 2025, and 192 during the first half of 2026. These figures highlight an ongoing pattern of targeting journalists, rather than isolated occurrences, with a focus on preventing media crews from accessing event scenes, detaining them, and confiscating or obstructing their equipment.
The Syndicate emphasized that these actions not only directly target journalists but also undermine the public's right to information and efforts to document and hold perpetrators accountable. The denial of media coverage is seen as an infringement on societal rights to information, essential for building a documented record of violations.
The report also reveals broader patterns of targeting journalists, including 27 detentions, 29 live-fire shootings, and 78 instances involving tear gas and sound grenades. Additionally, 22 incidents involved the seizure or destruction of journalistic equipment, and there were seven raids on homes or media institutions and three closures of media institutions.
Head of the Freedoms Committee, Mohammad Al-Lahham, highlighted that these figures indicate a recurring pattern of using military, security, and judicial measures to restrict journalists' ability to access, document, and publish information. He called for an independent international investigation into these systematic violations to assess compliance with international law.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate called on international and human rights institutions to take decisive measures to protect Palestinian journalists, ensure accountability for violations, and end the policy of restricting media coverage and withholding information from the public.
