Ramallah: Israeli forces on Monday released 96 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences from Ofer military prison, located to the west of Ramallah, as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. The move marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to implement a peace plan aimed at resolving the conflict in the region.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the International Committee of the Red Cross announced this morning that it had received 20 Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip in two batches and handed them over to the occupation authorities. This exchange is part of a broader plan where all living Israeli hostages in Gaza are to be released in exchange for the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners serving long sentences, including 96 from Ofer Prison and 154 from Ketziot Prison in the Negev. The prisoners will be transferred to the Gaza Strip before the majority are deported to Egypt.
Simultaneously, around 1,718 detainees from Gaza, who were arrested after the war began on October 7, 2023, are also set to be released. However, Israeli authorities have banned around 100 relatives of detainees scheduled for release from traveling abroad to receive their loved ones, who are set to be deported outside Palestine as part of the ceasefire deal.
On September 9, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an agreement to implement the first phase of his Middle East peace plan, which he announced on September 29. The plan calls for an end to the war on the Gaza Strip, the withdrawal of the occupation forces from the Strip, the entry of humanitarian aid, and a prisoner exchange.
According to prisoners' organizations, the number of detainees held inside Israeli jails exceeds 11,000, with conditions described as catastrophic, including reports of torture, starvation, and systematic medical neglect leading to the deaths of several detainees. There are 53 female prisoners, including three from Gaza, along with two minors.
Approximately 400 child prisoners are held in Ofer and Megiddo prisons, while the number of detainees held without trial has reached approximately 3,380 as of October.
