New York:Minister of Finance and Planning Estephan Salameh emphasized the necessity for increased international assistance to the Palestinian people as the government struggles to recover clearance revenues withheld by Israel for 17 months. This situation endangers the capacity of public institutions to provide essential services.
According to Palestine news and Information Agency, Salameh made these remarks during the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee's regular ministerial meeting, held remotely alongside the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Palestinian delegation was unable to attend in person due to the unfavorable stance of the United States.
Salameh expressed gratitude to donor countries for their contributions but highlighted that the support remains inadequate given the growing threats to the Palestinian people's ability to stay on their land. The situation is exacerbated by Israel's continued withholding of revenue and increased restrictions on the Palestinian economy and movement.
The meeting's participants praised the actions of 12 countries, led by Britain, opposing illegal settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, including settler violence. Salameh also stressed the importance of focusing on the early recovery and reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip, developed by the Palestinian government and the United Nations, amidst ongoing security and political uncertainties.
The attendees reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution and called for measures to support it. This includes the reunification of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, consolidation of the Gaza ceasefire, delivery of humanitarian aid, support for Palestinian state institutions, holding elections, and adherence to international law and UN resolutions.
