Ramallah: Fatah's Revolutionary Council announced its plan to participate in the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections through an official list. This decision involves consultations with factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and aims to protect the national project, broaden political partnership, and reaffirm the Palestinian people's role as the source of legitimacy and decision-making.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency, the council issued a statement at the conclusion of its first session, dubbed the "Steadfastness and Resilience Session," chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas. The statement emphasized that protecting Palestinians is central to the national action at this stage. The council asserted the Palestinian people's right to self-defense and their right to legitimate peaceful popular resistance.
The council highlighted the need for a serious, comprehensive national dialogue to achieve unity among all Palestinian factions and components. It emphasized restoring unity within the framework of the PLO to serve the higher national interest. Additionally, the council stressed the political and geographic unity of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, noting that protecting Palestinians and confronting settlement activity are responsibilities of both Fatah and the nation.
On the political level, the council described elections as a national and legal entitlement. They aim to strengthen Palestinian legitimacy and realize the right to self-determination through the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders. Furthermore, the council prioritized the issue of Palestinian prisoners, calling for action through international forums to secure their release, particularly focusing on Fatah Central Committee member Marwan Barghouti and Revolutionary Council member Jamal Hweil.
Fatah reiterated its commitment to leading the Palestinian people towards ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. The council reaffirmed its commitment to the PLO as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
