Government Operations Room Unveils Plan for Gaza Refugee Camp Reconstruction

Gaza strip: The Government Operations Room for Emergency Interventions in the Gaza Strip today unveiled a comprehensive recovery and reconstruction plan for refugee camps in the Gaza Strip. The presentation, attended by Ahmed Abu Holi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Head of the Department of Refugee Affairs, is part of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance sectoral recovery plans, improve national coordination, and allocate resources effectively to protect refugee rights and dignity.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the plan focuses on rebuilding and rehabilitating the damaged refugee camps to transform them into livable residential and humanitarian spaces. Additionally, the plan aims to prevent any attempts to target these camps or forcibly displace their residents, while preserving the unique character of the camps as symbols of the Palestinian refugee cause and the right of return.

Abu Holi highlighted that the Gaza Strip houses approximately 1.6 million Palestinian refugees, who form the majority of the population. These refugees reside in eight camps that have faced significant destruction of housing, infrastructure, and essential services, worsening the conditions of displacement and deprivation both within and outside the camps.

He further noted the extensive destruction across the eight camps, with Rafah and Jabalia camps experiencing nearly 90 percent destruction of residential units. The Al-Shati, Khan Younis, and Nuseirat camps have also suffered, with destruction levels approaching 75 percent.
