Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that talks between the US and Iran could prevent further casualties and help normalize navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while also supporting Pakistan's mediation efforts.
According to Anadolu Agency, Wang's remarks were made during a phone call with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Wang highlighted that dialogue is crucial to halting further casualties and preventing the conflict from escalating, as well as restoring normal navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He commended Pakistan for its efforts in de-escalating tensions and mediating between the US and Iran.
Pakistan confirmed on Thursday that it has played a direct role in facilitating communication between the US and Iran to end the ongoing conflict. Pakistani Foreign Minister Dar, through a post on the US social media platform X, reiterated the importance of restoring peace and stability in the Middle East. He emphasized the need for an immediate end to hostilities, the resumption of peace talks, protection for non-combatants, security of shipping lanes, and adherence to the UN Charter.
The conflict has intensified since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 deaths, including the then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran has launched waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets. These actions have led to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruption in global markets and aviation.
