Gaza: UN Women has estimated that more than 28,000 women and girls have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023. This tragic statistic highlights that, on average, one woman or girl has been killed every hour due to attacks by Israeli forces.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, the conflict has claimed the lives of thousands of mothers, leaving behind children, families, and communities in distress. UN Women emphasized the devastating human cost of the war, noting the loss of lives and futures. The situation has worsened after the ceasefire collapsed in March 2025, with the population facing nearly nine weeks of a blockade on humanitarian aid. This has led to severe shortages of food and essential supplies, increasing the risk of famine, particularly for over one million women and girls who are now confronting extreme hunger. UN Women highlighted the dire conditions of displacement, rising maternal mortality rates, and the lack of safety and protection mechanisms.
The statement from UN Women also detailed their ongoing efforts to collaborate with women-led civil society organizations in Gaza. Despite the challenging circumstances, these organizations strive to provide essential services and support to those affected. However, the scale of suffering exceeds available resources and capacity. UN Women called for an immediate and substantial increase in humanitarian aid, support, and funding to prevent further loss of life.
The overall death toll from the Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip has reached 53,573 since October 7, 2023, with approximately 121,688 individuals injured.
