UN Women Reports Massive Casualties Among Women and Girls in Gaza Since October 2023

Gaza:Nearly 50,000 women and girls have been killed or severely injured in Gaza since October 2023, as reported by UN Women.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency, UN Women's chief of humanitarian action, Sofia Calltorp, stated that more than 38,000 have died, and 11,700 have sustained injuries resulting in lifelong disabilities. Although a ceasefire agreement was enacted a year ago, violence persists, with 277 women and girls killed since October 2025.

Calltorp also highlighted the displacement crisis, noting that nearly one million women and girls have been forced from their homes, with many still living in tents or among ruins. The number of female-headed households in Gaza has doubled, with women now leading one in four households.

Women's organizations in Gaza face severe challenges due to funding cuts, with 13 out of 14 surveyed groups unable to meet increasing demands. All surveyed organizations reported a rise in gender-based violence, poverty, and mental health issues since 2025, with 13 observing an increase in child marriages.

UN Women has called for the full implementation of the ceasefire, adherence to international law, and accountability for violations. Calltorp emphasized the severe suffering and resilience displayed by the women in Gaza, stating, "What we have found is a horrific amount of collective suffering, an immense amount of pain, and a level of resilience and strength that no woman should have to bear."
