Gaza: The United Nations Security Council held its monthly session on the question of Palestine on Wednesday, followed by closed consultations, during which briefings were delivered on the situation.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the briefers emphasized that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip remains fragile due to continued Israeli bombardment, with Palestinians still being killed, while the situation in the West Bank continues to deteriorate rapidly. They underscored the importance of addressing the tragic situation in Gaza, where residents are enduring unbearable conditions and immense suffering, leading to a loss of hope.
The briefers called for establishing a political horizon to end the illegal occupation, realize the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, and advance the two-state solution. They indicated that the necessary means to move forward on a credible path are available, forming a political vision, a practical framework, and a coordinated international effort.
The briefings urged action to translate this vision into concrete steps, emphasizing the immediate and full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2803. This resolution aims to consolidate the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid, and advance reconstruction efforts.
They also highlighted that improving living conditions in Gaza requires moving beyond the emergency relief phase, with a focus on restoring essential systems and services without delay. Key areas of concern include sanitation, waste management, healthcare, and livelihoods.
Additionally, the briefers raised concerns about continued restrictions on the entry of vital humanitarian supplies, warning that the approaching winter season presents a significant challenge for Gaza residents, many of whom remain displaced and living in makeshift shelters.
Regarding the West Bank, the briefers noted widespread attacks by colonists and an almost complete lack of accountability for such crimes. They criticized the repeated failure of Israeli forces to protect Palestinians from these attacks and reported instances where Israeli forces allegedly facilitated or participated in the violence. They stressed that Israel, as the occupying power, must ensure the protection of the civilian population and hold perpetrators accountable.
The briefings also addressed the Israeli occupation authorities' raid on the Qalandia Training Center, operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jerusalem. The briefers reiterated calls on Israel to adhere to its obligations under international law and cease efforts to seize, control, or confiscate UNRWA facilities.
