UN Highlights Lack of Accountability for Israel as Key Factor in Gaza and West Bank Conflict

Gaza:Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has pointed out that Israel's lack of accountability for its actions in the Gaza Strip continues to fuel conflict in the region.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, Shamdasani addressed concerns about the ongoing human rights violations in Gaza, where the humanitarian situation has deteriorated to catastrophic levels. Despite a ceasefire announced in October of the previous year, over 70,000 people have been killed since October 2023, with more than 1,400 deaths occurring after the ceasefire.

Shamdasani described the dire conditions in both the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, highlighting starvation, war crimes, and potential crimes against humanity. She also noted the ongoing land confiscation in the West Bank and the daily fatalities among Palestinians, as well as the mistreatment of detainees in detention centers. The lack of accountability for these violations has been a persistent issue, exacerbating the conflict.

The UN spokesperson further emphasized that the crisis has been worsened by the restriction of humanitarian aid and increased land seizures. She also called for an international halt to supplying Israel with arms and diplomatic and financial support, stating that fulfilling this responsibility is a legal obligation for all Member States.
