President Abbas Sets New Date for Palestinian Elections in 2027

Hanoi:President Mahmoud Abbas has announced that simultaneous presidential and legislative elections will be held on September 11, 2027. This decision was formalized in a decree that cancels a previous schedule for legislative elections on November 28, 2026.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency, The decree invites Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip to participate in these elections, which will be conducted in accordance with the law. The change follows a consensus reached by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and various Palestinian factions, who identified the need for suitable political and security conditions for free and fair elections.

The decision to reschedule the elections was influenced by ongoing Israeli military actions, settlement expansions, and other measures that have posed significant obstacles. These include restrictions on movement and financial constraints due to Israel's withholding of Palestinian clearance revenues.

In Gaza, the decree highlights the challenging security and humanitarian situation, the lack of international stabilization forces as outlined by the United Nations, and the incomplete withdrawal of Israeli forces. These factors contribute to logistical difficulties in preparing for the elections.

The decree also addresses issues related to the access of Central Elections Commission staff and international observers to critical areas such as Gaza and East Jerusalem. These challenges complicate the ability to ensure that the elections meet legal and democratic standards.

President Abbas's decree underscores the commitment to conducting elections as a national and constitutional duty, emphasizing the importance of democratic representation and the renewal of legitimacy for Palestinian institutions. The Central Elections Commission is tasked with overseeing the electoral process to ensure its transparency and inclusivity.
