Ramallah: The Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) has reported a significant increase in the number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli detention facilities since October 2023, with the total reaching 92 confirmed cases. Among these, 53 detainees were identified as being from Gaza, highlighting the severe impact on this region.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the recent death of prisoner Moataz Al-Atrash from Hebron has contributed to this rising toll. The PPS statement released on Thursday detailed a range of systemic crimes and violations faced by detainees, including torture, starvation, medical neglect, abuse, sexual assault, mistreatment, and deprivation of basic human rights.
The PPS further elaborated on the uncertainty surrounding the fate of numerous detainees from Gaza due to enforced disappearances. Evidence suggests that many have been subjected to field executions, raising concerns about the treatment of prisoners. Since 1967, the total number of prisoners who have died in custody with known identities has reached 329.
In addition, the PPS highlighted that the bodies of 100 deceased prisoners are still being withheld by the Israeli authorities, with 89 of these deaths occurring since the onset of the recent conflict.
