Palestinian Women Face Disproportionate Impact Amid Ongoing Conflicts

Ramallah:On Palestinian Women's Day, statistics from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Women's Affairs highlight the challenges and pivotal roles of women in Palestine. The data reveals that Palestinian women, who make up approximately 49% of the population, are integral to the nation's resilience and development, even as they navigate severe economic, social, and health challenges.

According to Palestine news & Information Agency – WAFA – English, the humanitarian crisis since October 7th, 2023, has resulted in the loss of 74,382 Palestinian lives in the Gaza Strip, with women comprising a significant portion of the casualties. Over 12,500 women have been martyred, including 9,000 mothers, severely impacting the social fabric. The aggression has also led to the injury of 175,416 individuals, with women constituting 14% of these injuries.

The Ministry of Women's Affairs emphasizes the importance of acknowledging women's roles in national resilience and recovery. Efforts are underway to align policies with the Cross-Sectoral National Strategy for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment (2025-2027), focusing on protection, economic empowerment, and accountability.

In Gaza Strip, the ongoing conflict has reshaped household structures, with a significant increase in female-headed households. The collapse of the health sector has further exacerbated the situation, depriving many women of essential healthcare services, increasing risks for pregnant women, and leading to thousands of miscarriages.

The ongoing Israeli occupation has also led to widespread displacement and destruction of housing in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with significant impacts on women and children. The Ministry of Women's Affairs advocates for gender-responsive humanitarian assistance and the meaningful inclusion of women in decision-making processes related to recovery and reconstruction.

Despite these challenges, Palestinian women continue to demonstrate resilience, particularly in the education sector, where they exhibit high literacy rates and significant academic achievements. However, in the labor market, women face high unemployment rates and systemic barriers to decent work.

The Ministry of Women's Affairs is actively working to improve women's representation and influence in decision-making roles, striving to enhance their participation in governance and leadership positions. The establishment of the National Observatory on Violence Against Women is a strategic initiative to address violence and discrimination, providing data to inform policies and interventions.
