Occupation Court Rejects Ir Amim’s Petition Over ‘Public Park’

Jerusalem: An Israeli occupation court on Monday rejected a petition filed by the Israeli rights group Ir Amim against a colonial 'public park' project planned on vast tracts of Palestinian-owned land, northeast of occupied Jerusalem, according to the Jerusalem Governorate. The court's decision allows the continuation of a controversial project that could impact the urban expansion of Palestinian neighborhoods.

According to Palestine news and Information Agency, the Israeli occupation authorities' scheme targets lands in the towns of al-Tur and al-Issawiya as part of a project aimed at linking the city of Jerusalem with the settlement of Ma'ale Adumim and the colonial E1 area. This classification of Palestinian-owned lands as a 'public park' is expected to obstruct the construction of homes, schools, infrastructure, and essential services for local residents. The project is seen as part of a broader effort to strengthen Israeli control over the Old City of Jerusalem and its surrounding Palestinian neighborhoods while connecting Jerusalem with surrounding settlements.

The Jerusalem Governorate noted that the indigenous Palestinian population and supporting human rights organizations have been engaged in a legal battle for nearly two decades to freeze the project or minimize its effects. In previous years, they managed to delay the plan and introduce partial amendments. However, the recent court ruling signifies a setback for these efforts and a continuation of the implementation of the contentious project.
