Tel aviv: The Israeli occupation government has officially approved the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant step towards ending the ongoing conflict. The office of Israeli occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the government's endorsement of the proposal presented by U.S. President Donald Trump, which aims to conclude the two-year war in Gaza.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the ceasefire agreement includes several critical measures, such as a 72-hour suspension of all military operations, including aerial and artillery bombardments. This action is part of the broader framework proposed by President Trump, which also involves the immediate commencement of humanitarian and relief aid into Gaza, aligning with the provisions of earlier agreements.
The Israeli broadcasting authority reported that the proposal also calls for the suspension of aerial surveillance operations over areas from which the Israeli army has withdrawn. The agreement stipulates that the Israeli army must complete its withdrawal within 24 hours of the government's approval. Additionally, it mandates the release of all Israeli hostages, both alive and deceased, within 72 hours of the withdrawal.
Under the terms of the proposal, Israel is to release a corresponding number of Palestinian detainees, following agreed-upon lists. A task force comprising representatives from the United States, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and other countries will oversee the implementation of these terms.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the agreement as the first phase of his plan to achieve peace in the Middle East. The plan involves ending the war in Gaza, withdrawing occupation forces, delivering humanitarian aid, and exchanging hostages and prisoners.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the announcement, expressing hope for a lasting political solution that includes ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state. He praised the efforts of President Trump and the mediating countries and affirmed Palestine's readiness to collaborate with all parties to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Since October 7, 2023, the conflict in Gaza has resulted in severe humanitarian consequences, with over 67,000 civilians killed and nearly 170,000 wounded. The ongoing famine has claimed additional lives, including many children.
