Nouakchott: The Islamic Committee of the International Crescent has adopted a series of resolutions aimed at enhancing humanitarian efforts in the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. This decision came at the conclusion of the committee's 39th regular session, held in Nouakchott on July 9 and 10, 2026, with a focus on supporting the capacities of national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies.
According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the committee emphasized the importance of ensuring safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid and protecting relief and medical workers. It also highlighted the necessity of intensifying urgent humanitarian support for crisis-affected groups, particularly in regions such as Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, the Sahel region of Africa, and the Lake Chad Basin.
The session saw the adoption of reports and work plans from various departments and programs, including the International Crescent Department, the Islamic Forum for International Humanitarian Law, and others. The committee underscored the significance of continuing to document Israeli violations in Palestinian territories and proposed the establishment of a specialized center for this purpose in collaboration with the Palestinian and Jordanian Red Crescent societies.
Additionally, the committee called on member states to fulfill their financial obligations to enable an expanded humanitarian response. It approved a budget of US$2 million for 2026 along with the annual work program. Leadership roles were also confirmed, with Ambassador Ali Mahmoud Bouhadma re-elected as Chairman and Ambassador Babiker Ba as Vice-Chairman for a two-year term starting July 9, 2026. The Chairman was also tasked with consulting on the date and venue for the fortieth session.
