France Plans Targeted Fuel Aid Amid Mideast Oil Crisis

Paris: French Economy Minister Roland Lescure announced that the government will introduce 'targeted, temporary measures' to support populations affected by rising fuel prices, while ruling out any 'broad measures.' Lescure emphasized the need for strict budgetary discipline while managing the crisis, which he described as 'evolving day by day.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Lescure highlighted that broad measures would not be introduced, as they are considered 'ineffective,' 'costly,' and 'often counterproductive.' The government aims to ensure efficiency by closely monitoring the situation and implementing targeted measures. These measures, set to be announced at a press conference, will be 'sector-specific, targeted, and time-limited.'

Lescure will be joined by Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard and Energy Minister Maud Bregeon to detail the proposed measures. The plan includes support for 'heavy users,' such as 'road transport operators' and 'fishermen.' Additionally, Serge Papin, Minister for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and Purchasing Power, stated that the public investment bank would offer subsidized loans guaranteed by the state to assist with cash flow. Meanwhile, state services will defer payments on fiscal and social obligations.

The backdrop to this announcement is the ongoing air offensive by the United States and Israel on Iran, which has resulted in over 1,340 casualties, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, leading to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions in global markets and aviation.

The crisis has severely impacted the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for around 20 million barrels of oil daily. The disruption has escalated shipping costs and driven global oil prices higher, prompting the French government to act in support of those affected.
