London: Four European countries have called on Israel to abandon a proposed law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, expressing deep concern over its serious consequences.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy have issued a joint statement expressing grave concern over the approval of the draft legislation by the National Security Committee in the Knesset. The statement highlighted that the draft law would significantly increase the likelihood of the death penalty being implemented in Israel, emphasizing that this punishment is considered “inhumane and degrading” and lacks any deterrent effect.
The joint statement further reiterated the countries’ firm opposition to the death penalty in all circumstances and locations. It urged decision-makers in the Knesset and the Israeli government to reconsider and abandon these legislative plans.
