Tubas: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates: welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the substance of the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel's obligations, as the occupying power, toward the United Nations, international organizations, and other states in the occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Ministry emphasized that the resolution reaffirms the primacy of international law and the authority of the multilateral system in response to unlawful policies that threaten international peace and security and infringe on the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
It further stated that the overwhelming international support signifies an appropriate global response to Israel's actions targeting UNRWA and other UN agencies operating in the occupied Palestinian Territory. This includes Israel's recent move to replace the United Nations flag with the occupation flag, an action deemed a violation of international law, the UN Convention on Privileges and Immunities, and the ICJ advisory opinion.
The Ministry highlighted that the resolution marks a significant step in enhancing the United Nations' role in safeguarding the Palestinian people and ensuring adherence to the obligations of the occupying power. This particularly involves opening humanitarian corridors, securing basic needs, and halting measures that hinder the operations of UN agencies and international organizations in the occupied Palestinian Territory, especially in the Gaza Strip, to prevent famine.
The Ministry conveyed the State of Palestine's gratitude to the countries supporting the resolution, emphasizing that its true impact lies in its prompt and comprehensive implementation. It urged the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities.
The Ministry called upon all member states, as well as regional and international organizations, to support efforts to implement the resolution, take necessary political and legal actions to ensure accountability and prevent impunity, and strengthen the role of UNRWA and the United Nations in protecting the Palestinian people, ending the Israeli occupation, and achieving a just and lasting peace based on international law and relevant UN resolutions.
