Brussels: The European Union (EU) has called upon Israel to halt the E1 colonial settlement project, expressing significant concerns over its implications on regional stability and peace prospects. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the EU spokesperson issued a statement highlighting the gravity of the situation. The statement criticized the recent developments, including the publication of the deadline for offers on tenders for 3,401 housing units under the project, as well as the advancement of the "Sovereignty Road" construction. These actions were described by the EU as a serious provocation. Additionally, the EU voiced its apprehension regarding the Atarot and Nahalat Shimon settlement plans in East Jerusalem. The statement emphasized that the Israeli government's settlement policy poses an obstacle to peace, risks further instability in the West Bank, and could lead to the displacement of thousands of Palestinians. It also warned against the fragmentation of the West Bank, the encouragement of violence by settlers, and the undermining of long-term peace prospects and the feasibility of the two-state solution, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states. The EU has urged Israel to immediately reverse the settlement expansions, which are deemed illegal under international law. This call comes after months of accelerated approvals for new settlement plans in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The EU further stressed the importance of Israel adhering to its international obligations and protecting the Palestinian population in the occupied territories.
