EU and International Partners Support Palestinian Local Elections Amid Challenges

Brussels: The European Union and its member states, in collaboration with several international partners, expressed their support for the Palestinian local elections, which commenced on Saturday, despite the prevailing challenges.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the countries, which include the European Union, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, emphasized the significance of these elections as an opportunity for Palestinians to elect local councils and renew democratic legitimacy.

The joint statement highlighted that representatives from their diplomatic missions would be present at the invitation of the Central Elections Commission to observe the electoral process. This initiative underscores the importance of ensuring transparent, credible, and inclusive elections.

The EU and its partners view the elections as a crucial step in expanding democracy and reinforcing local governance, aligning with the ongoing reform process. The international community remains committed to supporting these democratic efforts in Palestine.
