Ramallah: The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission has confirmed an escalation in retaliatory measures against Palestinian detainees at Nafha prison, highlighting that these actions pose a grave threat to the detainees' lives. Reports indicate that all forms of beatings and torture have been inflicted in a frenzied and inhumane manner.
According to Palestine news and Information Agency - WAFA, a statement issued on Monday by the Commission revealed serious information about the conditions at Nafha prison gathered from firsthand testimonies of detainees released in recent days. The detainees described the conditions as bloody, emphasizing that the recent assaults were more severe than previous incidents without any real justifications.
The statement detailed that the assaults were widespread, targeting detainees during multiple raids on sections and cells. The case of detainee Muslema Thabet was highlighted due to the severity of the abuse he suffered. Thabet was reportedly severely beaten on the chest and limbs and subjected to pepper spray until he lost consciousness. Following this, he was thrown to the ground with disregard for his condition.
The prison administration also imposed punitive measures on Thabet, including confiscating his mattress and blankets amid cold conditions, denying him diabetes medication, and placing him under continuous threat. These actions have raised significant concern about the wellbeing of detainees.
The Commission has called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross and human rights and humanitarian organizations to urgently inspect the conditions at the occupation's prisons and detention centers. They stressed the need to address the severe conditions and end Israel's exclusive control over the detainees.
