Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) 6 in Western Visayas has issued a directive advocating for simple yet meaningful graduation and moving-up ceremonies for the end of the School Year 2025-2026, slated for March 30 or 31.
According to Philippines News Agency, DepEd data indicates that a total of 170,767 learners from Grades 6 and 12 will graduate, while 159,642 Kindergarten and Grade 10 learners will participate in moving-up ceremonies. Donald Genine, DepEd-6 Chief Education Supervisor, emphasized that the events should align with the theme 'Filipino Graduates Prepared to Give with Competence and Character' and avoid any form of extravagance. Genine stressed the importance of conducting ceremonies that are memorable without engaging in excessive spending, extravagant attire, or utilizing extraordinary venues.
The guidelines further stipulate that no individual is permitted to collect fees or contributions from teachers or learners for these events. DepEd-6 Director Cristito Eco clarified that any expenses incurred should be covered by the school. Eco highlighted that while donations are acceptable, they should not be solicited as collections. He noted that costs associated with sound systems, medals, and other expenses are permissible under the school's miscellaneous and other operating expenses (MOOE).
Director Eco also urged school principals to discourage the practice of parents giving extravagant gifts to their children during these ceremonies. He advocated for a celebration that is simple yet impactful, ensuring it serves as a meaningful milestone in the students' educational journey.
