Antipolo: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is targeting a minimum voter turnout of 65 percent for the special election in Antipolo City's 2nd District this Saturday, with aspirations to reach up to 70 percent of the 252,793 registered voters.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec chairperson George Garcia stated that the goal of achieving a 65 to 70 percent turnout is both reasonable and practical. Garcia expressed optimism about meeting this target, especially since March 14 has been designated as a special non-working day in the district to boost voter participation.
Garcia highlighted the importance of cooperation from the local government in encouraging citizens to vote. He also reminded voters that there are six candidates competing for the district's seat in the House of Representatives. The candidates include Bong Acop, Dandin Infante, Reden Llaga, Maria Trinidad Cafirma, Nathaniel Lobigas, and Irvin Paulo Tapales.
Garcia addressed rumors regarding a candidate's disqualification, clarifying that reports of disqualification are false. He noted that a case against Bong Acop is still pending with the election body, emphasizing that the nature of the case, whether it constitutes an election offense or disqualification, is yet to be determined.
The special election has been necessitated by the passing of Rep. Romeo Acop on December 20, 2025.
