Azerbaijan Acknowledges US Support Following Drone Strike on Nakhchivan Exclave

Baku: Azerbaijan expressed appreciation Saturday for the US' statement condemning a drone strike on the Nakhchivan exclave, which injured four people earlier this week. The Foreign Ministry said that it appreciated the State Department's statement as it demonstrated Washington's 'support for its partners.'

According to Anadolu Agency, the position expressed by the US fully corresponds to the 'letter and spirit' of the charter on strategic partnership signed Feb. 10 between the two countries. The Foreign Ministry noted that during this tense period, many countries have shown their support and solidarity with Azerbaijan, with the backing from the United States being particularly significant. They expressed gratitude to the US for its principled position.

Earlier Saturday, principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott issued a statement in which the US "strongly" condemned the drone attack, labeling it as a 'flagrant violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and a needless escalation of Iran's aggression.'

Baku reported Thursday that its Nakhchivan exclave was struck by drones launched from Iranian territory, resulting in injuries to four individuals and damage to the region's international airport. President Ilham Aliyev accused Iran of committing a "terrorist act" and demanded an explanation, an apology, and accountability from Iranian officials for those responsible.

Iran has denied launching any projectiles toward Azerbaijan, as stated during a call between Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov. Iran added that its armed forces are conducting an investigation into the incident.
