Israeli Authorities Demolish Homes in Unrecognized Naqab Villages

Umm Numaila:Israeli authorities have demolished three homes in the village of Umm Numaila, also known as Arab al-Ziyadna, along with other structures in Abu Quraynat. These villages, northeast of Rahat in the Negev, are not officially recognized by the state.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, the demolitions are part of a broader trend affecting Arab villages in the Negev, causing significant concern among residents about the future of their homes. The demolitions are justified by Israeli authorities on the basis that the structures were built without permits.

Residents of Abu Quraynat have resorted to "self-demolitions," burning what remains of their homes to avoid state-led demolition and the accompanying fines, which can be as high as 60,000 shekels. This destruction primarily affects unrecognized Arab villages, where residents face demolition orders but lack the legal means to obtain construction permits due to the state's refusal to recognize these villages or provide necessary planning schemes.

Tens of thousands of Arab citizens in the Negev endure difficult living conditions in these unrecognized villages, lacking adequate housing, infrastructure, and public services. The issue is part of a larger crisis affecting Arab towns across the country, which struggle with urban planning and housing challenges.
