Ramallah: Palestinian factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) today convened to strategize for the forthcoming legislative and Palestinian National Council elections. The meeting focused on enhancing the PLO's role and unifying Palestinian ranks in light of current political and field challenges.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the meeting was attended by key figures including PLO Executive Committee Secretary-General Azzam al-Ahmad, Executive Committee member Wasel Abu Yousef, Palestinian economist Munib al-Masri, and representatives from various Palestinian factions, political forces, and national figures.
Al-Ahmad emphasized that the primary goal of the meeting, held at the PLO headquarters, was to deliberate on election preparations, particularly for the Legislative Council and National Council. This initiative aims to refresh Palestinian institutions and bolster their capacity to tackle ongoing challenges. The meeting also aimed to unify the positions of different PLO factions and independent national figures, to better oppose Israeli policies focused on annexing parts of the occupied West Bank and altering realities in Jerusalem.
In discussing the National Council elections, al-Ahmad noted that legislative elections are integral to the renewal of PLO institutions. He explained that elected members of the Legislative Council would form part of the National Council, with the remaining members chosen through consensus based on agreed arrangements.
Abu Yousef highlighted that the meeting occurs amid significant challenges and threats to the Palestinian cause, including the war on the Gaza Strip, ongoing settlement activities, and attempts to change the status quo in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. He emphasized the necessity of fortifying the Palestinian internal front and achieving national unity to uphold Palestinian national rights, including the right of return, self-determination, and establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Abu Yousef reiterated the significance of the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and advocated for increased participation of various Palestinian factions and forces within its institutions to unify political and national efforts.
Al-Masri called for ending divisions and unifying the national vision, stressing that national unity is vital for protecting the Palestinian cause and enhancing the ability to confront current challenges. He pointed out that the Palestinian national project is at a critical juncture, facing threats from the war on Gaza, settlement expansions, annexation, and settler attacks in the occupied territories, which risk pushing Palestinians toward displacement or acceptance of realities undermining their national rights.
