Brussels: The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Mohammed Al-Yamahi, has reached out to the National Assembly and the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as the European Parliament, expressing his strong opposition to any potential actions to withdraw the recognition of the State of Palestine or to move the Slovenian embassy to occupied Jerusalem.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency, Al-Yamahi's letters are a response to reports suggesting that the Slovenian government is considering actions that would violate international law and resolutions. Such moves, he argues, would undermine ongoing international efforts to implement a two-state solution and bring an end to the occupation.
Al-Yamahi stressed that acknowledging the State of Palestine is a permanent legal and moral duty, reflecting the respect for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination-a right that is widely recognized across the globe. He cautioned that relocating any embassy to occupied Jerusalem would breach Security Council Resolution 478 (1980) and other relevant international resolutions, including Resolutions 242, 338, and 2334. This act, he noted, would also contradict the European stance that the status of Jerusalem should be a matter resolved through negotiations in line with international law.
In his communication with the European Parliament, Al-Yamahi urged the use of parliamentary and political tools to maintain Europe's supportive position on Palestinian rights and to resist any efforts that legitimize policies of annexation, settlement building, and the imposition of a fait accompli by the occupation forces.
He referenced the advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice dated July 19, 2024, which affirmed the duty of all nations not to recognize the illegal circumstances stemming from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, nor to aid actions that would perpetuate it.
Al-Yamahi warned that rescinding recognition of the State of Palestine or altering the legal status of occupied Jerusalem would disrupt the international legal order and embolden the Israeli occupation to continue its expansionist strategies, posing a threat to both regional and global security and stability.
He reaffirmed his commitment to engaging with various regional and international parliaments to rally support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights and to counter efforts that might undermine the Palestinian cause or diminish their inalienable rights.
