Palestine’s Permanent Representative Urges Belgium to Finalize Recognition and Support EU Partnership

Cairo: The Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the Arab League, Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, called on Belgium to complete its recognition of the State of Palestine, which it announced in September 2025, and to support a strategic partnership agreement between the European Union and the State of Palestine, as well as to provide the necessary financial support to the Palestinian government to enable it to fulfill its obligations.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, this appeal was made during a meeting with a Belgian delegation headed by the Belgian Special Envoy for the Middle East Peace Process, Johan Vercammen, Belgian Consul General in Jerusalem, Anick Van Calster, and Belgium's Ambassador to Egypt, Bart De Groof. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Palestine to the Arab League in Cairo.

Al-Aklouk acknowledged Belgium's positions during the meeting, highlighting their alignment with international law, including Belgium's support for UNRWA, the suspension of consular dealings with colonists, its advocacy for a review of the European Union Association Agreement with the Israeli occupation, and its involvement in the case filed by South Africa before the International Court of Justice concerning genocide accusations in the Gaza Strip.

He further urged European Union countries to emulate Belgium and other European states' positions by holding the Israeli occupation accountable and imposing punitive measures on Israeli officials.

The Belgian delegation, on its part, emphasized the importance of unifying the Palestinian Territory under the administration of the Palestinian government, the necessity to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, and highlighted the significance of the Arab role in this context.

Members of the Palestinian mission to the Arab League were also present at the meeting.
