Jerusalem: The Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem compelled a Jerusalemite citizen to demolish his own home in East Jerusalem's Umm Tuba village on Sunday, citing the absence of an Israeli-issued building permit. The home, a 100-square-meter structure built in 2014, provided shelter for a family of nine, including the husband and wife, their five children, and the husband's parents.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the occupation authorities had imposed fines totaling 45,000 shekels on the property. Residents of occupied Jerusalem are often forced to self-demolish their homes under permit-related pretexts. Failure to comply results in demolition by occupation bulldozers and additional penalties, including heavy fines and demolition costs.
The Jerusalem Governorate has stated that self-demolition is part of a broader scheme targeting the Palestinian presence in the city. This policy aims to forcibly displace residents and increase restrictions, significantly affecting neighborhoods around Al-Aqsa Mosque.
