Brussels: The European Commission on Friday announced an investigation into a cyberattack that targeted its online infrastructure earlier this week.
According to Anadolu Agency, the incident was discovered on March 24 and impacted the cloud infrastructure used to host websites on the Europa.eu platform. Officials reported that immediate action was taken to contain the attack.
The Commission stated that its prompt response ensured the incident was contained and measures were implemented to mitigate risks to services and data. Importantly, the availability of Europa websites was not disrupted.
Preliminary findings indicate that data may have been extracted from the affected websites. The Commission is notifying EU bodies that could have been impacted, while a comprehensive investigation into the breach's extent continues.
It emphasized that its internal systems remained unaffected by the attack.
The Commission committed to ongoing monitoring of the situation and is prepared to take additional steps to protect its systems and data. Furthermore, it intends to analyze the incident to bolster its cybersecurity capabilities.
This announcement comes amid increasing concerns over cyber and hybrid threats across Europe, especially those targeting essential services and democratic institutions.
The Commission is actively working to enhance the EU's resilience to such attacks.
