Manila: The Department of Migrant Workers in Bicol (DMW-5) on Wednesday assured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families of continuous assistance and communication support as tensions persist in the Middle East.
According to Philippines News Agency, DMW Labor and Employment Officer Merry Christ Joely Eguia stated that the agency has activated several mechanisms to ensure that OFWs and their families remain connected with government assistance. Eguia highlighted that 24/7 hotlines are currently active not only in the Bicol Region but nationwide to address inquiries and concerns of OFWs, especially those whose families are worried about their situation abroad.
The agency is also coordinating closely with migrant workers' offices stationed in various countries, along with Philippine embassies and consulates under the Department of Foreign Affairs, to provide immediate information and assistance. Aside from communication support, Eguia noted that the regional office offers legal assistance, welfare services, repatriation support, and psychosocial services to OFWs and their families.
Labor disputes, contract violations, unpaid salaries, and other employment-related issues are among the most common concerns raised by OFWs. DMW has legal officers available to assist workers facing such cases. Additionally, the agency supports returning OFWs who decide to stay in the country permanently through reintegration programs. Qualified beneficiaries may receive livelihood assistance in the form of financial support to start small businesses, after undergoing financial literacy seminars and business management training.
DMW also organizes a "travel entrepreneur" program, where returning OFWs are brought to successful businesses in the region, particularly those owned by former OFWs, to inspire them and provide practical ideas for enterprise development. DMW partners with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Department of Agriculture, and other agencies to deliver free skills training for OFWs.
"For those who prefer employment instead of entrepreneurship, the agency coordinates with the Department of Labor and Employment and local Public Employment Service Offices for job facilitation in their respective provinces," Eguia said. DMW-5 emphasized that both documented and undocumented OFWs may seek assistance from the government, urging them or their families to contact the nearest Migrant Workers Office, embassy, or DMW regional office for support.
The agency encouraged families of OFWs to remain calm and coordinate with official channels for updates, assuring them that the government continues to monitor the situation and provide assistance when needed.
