Al-bireh: The Chairman of the Central Elections Commission (CEC), Rami Hamdallah, received the Vice President of the State of Palestine, Hussein Al-Sheikh, at the CEC's headquarters to discuss the latest updates and developments of the electoral process.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the meeting concentrated on the progress and flow of the electoral process and the ongoing preparations to conduct elections in compliance with existing legal and professional frameworks. Hamdallah shared insights into the preparations for the local elections, highlighting the finalization of the voters' registry update and the conclusion of the exhibition and challenges stage, ensuring data accuracy.
Hamdallah also discussed the technical and administrative readiness for the nomination stage, noting the development of clear operational plans and specialized training programs for field teams to efficiently manage and verify nomination applications. Coordination with international organizations and donors, including the Elections Ad Hoc Sector Working Group, continues to mobilize technical and logistical support for conducting elections according to international standards.
Challenges facing the CEC, such as funding issues and restrictions imposed by the occupation affecting field teams' mobility, were also addressed. Hamdallah emphasized the development of alternative plans to ensure the continuation of work and an unhindered electoral process. The decision to conduct local elections in Deir al-Balah Municipality in the Gaza Strip was highlighted as a step toward unity in the Palestinian electoral system.
Vice President Al-Sheikh affirmed that elections are a fundamental pillar of the Palestinian political system, praising the professionalism and independence of the CEC. He highlighted the significance of the electoral process in advancing democracy and reinforcing internal unity, noting that it reaffirms the Palestinian people's commitment to democratic choices despite existing challenges.
