Denmark Accelerates Funding to UNRWA Amid Intense Pressure

Copenhagen: Denmark has taken a significant step by disbursing all planned funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) earlier than scheduled. Danish Foreign Minister Lars L¸kke Rasmussen announced the decision, highlighting the vital role the agency plays for Palestinians in Gaza and surrounding regions. The early disbursement amounts to over £14 million.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Denmark and UNRWA had signed a Multi-Year Agreement (MYA) for the 2023-2027 period. This agreement stipulates that Denmark will contribute DKK 105 million (approximately US$ 15.2 million) annually, totaling DKK 525 million (around US$ 75.2 million). The Danish contribution is set to support essential services for Palestine refugees in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. These services include primary health care, education, social protection, infrastructure improvement, and protection.

Ahmed Abu Holi, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and head of its Refugee Affairs Department, expressed appreciation for Denmark's commitment. He noted that the early and flexible funding model adopted by Denmark is crucial for the stability of UNRWA's programs and sets an example of responsible support in a challenging time. Abu Holi called on other donor countries to follow Denmark's lead by increasing their funding and providing it early to help UNRWA manage its budget effectively in the first quarter of the year.
