Khartoum: Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, vowed on Thursday to secure victory in the ongoing conflict against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), while also emphasizing the possibility of national reconciliation. Burhan's statements were made during a speech commemorating the 70th anniversary of Sudan's independence.
According to Anadolu Agency, Burhan assured the Sudanese people that triumph was imminent and that it would be a victory for the entire nation. He reiterated that the opportunity for national reconciliation remained available, inviting all parties willing to join the effort towards unity. Burhan highlighted how the war had unified the Sudanese people, bolstering their resolve and providing assurances of forthcoming victory to the residents of the conflict-stricken Darfur and Kordofan regions.
The ongoing conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF, has resulted in the deaths of thousands and displaced millions. The Kordofan states-North, West, and South-have been particularly affected, experiencing intense battles that have forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.
In the geographical tug-of-war, the RSF maintains control over all five states of the Darfur region, except for parts of North Darfur still under army control. Meanwhile, the army holds sway over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum, located in the south, north, east, and center of the country.
Burhan took the opportunity to commend political factions supporting the army, reiterating the open invitation to national reconciliation for those willing to align with the pursuit of peace.
