Rome: President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome to discuss the latest developments in Palestine.
According to Palestine news and Information Agency - WAFA, President Abbas commended Prime Minister Meloni's efforts to enhance bilateral relations, emphasizing the longstanding and renewed connections between the two nations and their citizens. He conveyed appreciation to Italy for its humanitarian support to the people of Gaza, including medical treatment for injured children, training for Palestinian police, and participation in the European monitoring mission at the Rafah border crossing.
President Abbas updated the Italian Prime Minister on the current situation in the Palestinian territories, focusing on efforts to maintain the ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He stressed the necessity of implementing the second phase of the Trump plan, which involves disarming Hamas and other factions, forming a unified Palestinian police force, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the full resumption of Palestinian authority responsibilities, including reconstruction.
Additionally, President Abbas highlighted the need to prevent forced displacement, secure lasting calm in the West Bank to halt Israeli settlement expansion and annexation attempts, curb settler violence, release withheld Palestinian funds, and protect Islamic and Christian holy sites.
Accompanying President Abbas were Ziad Abu Amr, a member of the PLO Executive Committee, Majdi Khaldi, Presidential Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs, and Mona Abuamara, the Palestinian Ambassador to Italy.
