Paris: Left-wing politicians and activists unfurled a Palestinian flag on the facade of Paris City Hall for approximately 30 minutes on Monday, challenging both the advisory from the French interior ministry and the stance of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. This demonstration coincided with the anticipated announcement by President Emmanuel Macron of France's recognition of the state of Palestine at the United Nations. More than 86 towns and cities across France participated in similar acts of defiance, raising the Palestinian flag in a symbolic gesture of support.
According to France24.com, France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau had issued a circular instructing local prefects to discourage the display of Palestinian flags. This directive came amid growing international support for the recognition of a Palestinian state, a movement led by Macron alongside other Western nations such as the UK, Australia, and Canada. France, home to western Europe's largest Jewish population and a significant Muslim community, finds itself at a sensitive juncture as it navigates the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Socialist Party mayors of Nantes and Rennes were among the first to display Palestinian flags outside their city halls. Rennes Mayor Nathalie Appéré emphasized the importance of their actions, stating, "Our responsibility is to reject silence and to do everything in our power, here and now, to put an end to the horror."
In the northern suburb of Saint-Denis, a flag-raising ceremony was attended by Socialist Party leader Faure, who opposed the interior ministry's directive and urged President Macron to retract it. Faure clarified that the flag symbolized the rights of Palestinians to freedom and self-determination, rather than representing any militant group.
On this "historic day for peace," Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot urged unity and discouraged political divides during an appearance on TF1 television. In a gesture of peace, both Israeli and Palestinian flags, along with images of a dove and olive branch, were projected onto the Eiffel Tower on Sunday night. Mayor Anne Hidalgo reiterated Paris's commitment to a two-state solution, while leftist leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticized the display of the Israeli flag on the iconic landmark.
In a bid to address the emotional reactions, President Macron released a video reaffirming France's dedication to peace, an immediate ceasefire, and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Of the 251 people captured during the October 2023 attack by Palestinian militants, 47 remain in Gaza, with 25 confirmed dead by the Israeli military.
