Gaza: Around 90% of families in the Gaza Strip are experiencing a severe water shortage, medical sources report, as the occupation's systematic destruction of infrastructure continues into its 583rd day. These disruptions have severely impacted daily life, leaving residents struggling to meet basic water needs.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the percentage of contaminated water samples has surged to over 25%, resulting in the spread of diseases among the population. This situation is exacerbated by the summer heat, which increases the demand for clean drinking water. Communities residing in displacement sites face dire conditions, as water sources remain largely unavailable.
The medical sources further highlighted the environmental risks posed by malfunctioning sewage systems. With 90% of desalination plants and 80% of sewage plants out of service, there is a heightened threat to groundwater quality and an increase in seawater pollution. Cesspits intended for sewage are contributing to these environmental hazards, complicating efforts to address the ongoing water crisis in the region.
