Tel Aviv: Amnesty International has announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now officially a wanted individual under international law. This statement was released by Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, on Thursday, marking a significant development in the realm of international justice.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, Callamard stated that the arrest warrants against Netanyahu represent a historic breakthrough in holding those accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable. She emphasized that this move by the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a crucial step towards ending the culture of impunity that has long been prevalent in human rights issues.
Callamard urged ICC member states and the broader international community to ensure that individuals accused of such grave offenses are brought to trial. She insisted there should be no sanctuary for those alleged to have committed these heinous crimes. The issuance of thes
e arrest warrants by the ICC is seen as a beacon of hope for countless victims, reinforcing the universal value of international law and justice.
Further, Callamard highlighted the importance of holding senior officials accountable to address ongoing rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories. Such accountability, she argued, is essential in tackling the systematic dispossession and oppression faced by Palestinians under what she described as Israel’s unlawful occupation and apartheid system.
The ICC’s charges against Netanyahu and Gallant, she noted, include war crimes that constitute ‘grave breaches’ of the Geneva Conventions. Callamard reiterated that all states are obligated to prosecute individuals accused of these serious violations, irrespective of their nationality or that of their victims.
