MALAYSIA LAUDS UNRWA FOR ONGOING MANAGEMENT REFORMS FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES

Malaysia has lauded the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for its ongoing management reforms to operate on a sustainable and cost-effective basis.

The Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Secretary-General (Multilateral Affairs), Kennedy Jawan said the country remained committed to working closely with UNRWA and relevant parties to alleviate the sufferings of the Palestinian refugees.

In a statement made available to Bernama here in conjunction with the Extraordinary Ministerial Conference of UNRWA held in Rome on March 15, he said in view of the financial situation faced by UNRWA, the conference was necessary to enable UNRWA to continue its crucial role.

Malaysia has been a firm supporter and regular contributor to the Palestinian cause, including through UNRWA.

Over the years, the Malaysian Government has provided assistance to the government and people of Palestine, both in cash and in kind, particularly for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Palestinian societies, he said.

Jawan added that Malaysian non-governmental organisations too, were strong supporters of the Palestinian cause, contributing regularly to provide relief to the Palestinian people.
